Teen Driving 101

If you have a teen learning to drive, you’re probably feeling equal parts proud and stressed. We see it all the time in our office when working with Indiana families who are navigating Indiana teen driver insurance for the first time. One minute they’re asking for the keys, the next you’re wondering if they remembered which pedal is the brake.

Teen drivers are still developing their skills, and those early driving habits play a huge role in both safety and insurance costs. The good news is there are simple steps parents can take to help their teen become a safer driver while also taking advantage of discounts and tools designed specifically for teen driver needs.

One tool we encourage is telematics. Programs like Farmers Signal App help teens see how their driving habits stack up. Things like speed, braking, and phone use are tracked, and safe driving can lead to greater discounts. We always tell parents this isn’t about spying, it’s about coaching and building awareness early.

Good grades can help too. Many companies offer a good student discount for teens with a 3.0 GPA or better. If your teen is working hard in school, make sure you’re getting credit for it.

We also encourage families to practice driving beyond sunny afternoons. Indiana weather isn’t always forgiving, so it’s important teens get experience driving at night, in the rain, and in winter conditions while you’re still in the passenger seat.

Some families also choose to use a dash cam. It can encourage safer driving and help protect your teen if an accident ever happens.

Most importantly, set clear driving rules early and stick to them. Consistency makes a big difference.

If you’d like help reviewing teen driver discounts or setting up tools like Signal, we’re always happy to walk through options with you. Helping families protect their drivers is what we do every day.
