Why Uninsured Motorist Property Damage (UMPD) Coverage is a Must for Indiana Drivers
When you’re looking over your auto policy documents you may notice a coverage called uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD).
This is usually included with the other liability coverages and often the most overlooked. However, I truly believe this coverage is one of the most important coverages on your policy, often because it can make a huge financial difference for our clients.
What is Uninsured Motorist Property Damage (UMPD)?
Uninsured Motorist Property Damage or UMPD, provides coverage for your damages if another driver hits you and they do not have any insurance (or not enough insurance). According to a 2023 study by the Insurance Research Council, 14% of Indiana motorists were driving around uninsured. Unfortunantely, the data suggests that this number is only going to increase over time making this coverage more valuable for Indiana drivers. This is why this coverage is a crucial and affordable way to protect your vehicle and your finances. It helps fill a major gap in protection and ensures you’re not left paying for someone else’s mistake.
Benefits of UMPD Coverage
Avoid Costly Lawsuits: Without UMPD, you may need to file a lawsuit against the at-fault driver to recover costs—something most people want to avoid.
Lower Deductibles: Many UMPD policies have smaller deductibles than collision coverage, and in some cases, even a $0 deductible.
Protection with Liability-Only Coverage: If your vehicle is hit by an uninsured driver and you only carry liability coverage, UMPD can cover the damage that would otherwise come out of pocket.
Important Indiana-Specific Considerations
Did you know? In the state of Indiana, we must know who caused the damage for UMPD coverage to pay out. Which means, hit and run losses would be covered under collision until we can track down who caused the damage.
If you’re not sure whether your current policy includes UMPD or if your deductibles are set up the right way, we’re always happy to review your coverage and walk through your options with you.
Because our goal is simple: to make sure you’re properly protected and confident in your coverage.
